This is kinda serving a dual purpose, its my first image post here and Im having a hell of a time trying to get rid of the hard shadow edges caused by the spot lights (green arrows).

Follow-ups

Q: Anyone have any ideas how I can get these to render softer?
A: I guess this is a workaround if you don't have VRay Advanced and you don't want to use area shadows. If there was anything far away from a surface that it cast a shadow on (floating in the air) this might not look correct.

I created a scene that uses both of our techniques. I like the lens idea and I've expanded on it some so that the lens becomes a glow.

The lens material consists of an output of 200 or so for self illumination with color checked and a falloff in the opacity slot. I like the contrast of harsh shadows on the floor but nice soft ones on the wall.
