Topic: VRayMat vs. Standard: The best of both worlds
posted by SREV
archived on 20.5.2002
I'd really appreciate help and advice on how to get the best out of the VRay material. Below are two pics, one with a Max standard material with diffuse, spec. level, and bump maps applied, the second is the same thing as a VRay material with a diffuse and bump map.
I'm not as happy with the Vray mat as the standard nat but I'm sure that's because of my lack of understanding. My two main queries are why does the material look so saturated (almost self-illuminated) and flat, and also how do you get normal non-glossy reflections - or is it that the real-world physics of VRay negates the Max standard approach to softer reflections?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
(By the way, lighting is just one area light and GI as fill.)

Follow-ups
The VRay material looks so flat because of lack of specular highlights. To get these, set the Glossy parameter for the reflection to something below 1.0 and set the reflection color to something other than black. You may want to uncheck "Trace reflections" if you just want the highlights and not true glossy reflections.
